IP Snakes & Ladders

19 April 2016

5.30 pm to 9pm

14 South Square, Gray’s Inn, London, WC1R 5JJ

J A Kemp is hosting this ninth London Cleantech Cluster IP Special Interest Group.

On Tuesday 19 April, J A Kemp partner Tom Albertini will be leading an informal and helpful seminar where he will discuss what startup businesses need to know regarding branding, trade marks, designs and copyright.

Compared to big businesses, startups face more acute pressures in terms of money, time and staying on the cutting edge. This means that having the right IP protection at the right time is crucial to support your business plan.

The session is aimed specifically at startups and entrepreneurs. It will cover aspects of trade marks, designs, copyright and confidential information. Questions Tom will be answering during this seminar include:

  • •  If ideas per se cannot be protected, what can be protected?
    • How do I ensure my chosen brand is available to use and protect, free from objection from third parties?
    • How do I protect a brand name/logo?
    • What is copyright and when does it subsist (focussing in particular on copyright issues surrounding logos)?
    • How do I prove ownership?
    • What should I do to ensure I own the rights if I employ a designer?
    • What are design rights and how can I protect them?
    • What are patents and what do they protect?
    • I need to disclose my ideas and my IP rights; how do I make sure my position is protected?
    • How can I exploit my IP rights to generate revenue for my business?

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask specific questions about their own IP situation, as well as learn about the fundamental concepts involved in protecting their intellectual property in the clean technology context.  There will also be refreshments and plenty of time for networking.  This event is open to all cleantech businesses and is free to attend.

In addition to all this, J A Kemp will be giving away two CleanSpace™ Tags, worth £75 each at the event.  The Tag, the world’s first FREEVOLT powered consumer electronic device, is a portable air pollution sensor that enables you to track your personal pollution exposure so you can see what you are actually breathing in, in real-time. The Tag connects to your phone via Bluetooth and sends carbon monoxide levels to the CleanSpace app. The air pollution data is then anonymised, aggregated and combined with data from all the other Tags across the UK.  The Tag features FREEVOLT™ technology which harvests ambient RF energy to charge this low energy device. CleanSpace and FREEVOLT are the brainchild of J A Kemp’s cleantech client Lord Paul Drayson and his team at Drayson Technologies Limited. Protecting Your IP when Crowdfunding

Wednesday 11 November 2015

5.30 pm to 9pm

14 South Square, Gray’s Inn, London, WC1R 5JJ

J A Kemp is hosting this eighth London Cleantech Cluster IP Special Interest Group shortly.

Crowdfunding, unlike some other forms of raising finance, involves dealing with the general public and so any statements made during the funding process will be made openly in the public domain.  This has implications for IP, both from a business integrity perspective and from an IP protection viewpoint.  Does IP strengthen your proposal? What can you disclose without undermining any future IP?  Do potential investors need to know how your innovation works?

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask specific questions about their own IP situation, as well as learn about the fundamental concepts involved in protecting their intellectual property in the clean technology context.  There will also be a case study on Den Automation, a cleantech client of J A Kemp’s which has completed two successful rounds of funding on Seedrs after protecting its intellectual property rights.  There will also be refreshments and plenty of time for networking.  This event is open to all cleantech businesses and is free to attend.

IP Strategies for Cleantech Companies

9 October 2014

5.30 pm to 9pm

14 South Square, Gray’s Inn, London, WC1R 5JJ

J A Kemp is a leading UK and European Patent and Trade Mark Attorney firm that combines independent thinking with collective excellence. As a Diamond Member of the London Cleantech Cluster, they are hosting the fifth London Cleantech Cluster Special Interest Group on the subject of ‘IP Strategies for Cleantech Companies’ on 9 October 2014. This is open to all cleantech businesses and is a free event.

Protecting IP can be any combination of cost-effective or expensive and ineffectual or efficient. Sometimes it is right to protect the IP through a registered patent, other times its efficacy is open to question and occasionally it can be the wrong thing to do.

With new markets, open source IP can be the way forward, in which case IP protection can be unhelpful! In major global markets, a readily re-engineered product may need a significant amount of protection, but that may also require the will to contest IP in foreign jurisdictions.

J A Kemp will use clean technology case studies to analyse the strategies followed to protect the commercial value embedded in the technology. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask specific questions about their own IP situation, as well as learn about the fundamental concepts involved in protecting their intellectual property in the clean technology context. There will also be plenty of time for networking.
